4 Healthy Ways To Heal From Heart Break

Your relationship has ended. Now you are having to deal with the pain of a broken heart.  Unfortunately, many people attempt to cope with their pain using methods which tend to make their distress even worse. Some examples of these kinds of behaviors are:

  • abusing alcohol or drugs
  • serial bed hopping
  • withdrawing from family and friends

However, this does not have to be your story.  You can heal from a broken heart and come through the experience a much stronger person.  It may be hard to believe right now, but it is true.

The following four healthy strategies not only will help ease your pain, but also provide you with the hope you may find so elusive right now.

  1. Give yourself permission to grieve.  Grieving is often part of the process of recovering from a break up. So take as much time as you need to grieve your loss.
  2. Lean on family and friends.   Remember, your family and friends love you and want to support you through this difficult time.  Let them.
  3. Laugh.  I'm a big believer in the healing power of laughter.  When you begin to feel weighed down, call up an old friend and enjoy reminiscing about the past.  Watch a favorite comedy you find hilarious. The point is to let yourself go and experience one of nature's best coping mechanisms. You will be amazed at how quickly you will begin to feel better.
  4. Rediscover who you are.  Now that you are single again, take the opportunity to reaffirm your identity apart from being in a relationship. For instance, seriously consider taking up the hobby you have always been interested in.  Learn a new language. Do more traveling. Start a business.  The point is to remember your life is full of endless possibilities.

Finally, despite the pain you may be feeling now, it will not last forever.  By using coping strategies like those just described,  healing for your broken heart will come.
