21 Healthy Relationship Pledges To Make

Pledge: A solemn vow or agreement  to do or refrain from doing something.

After spending five years involved with a married man who promised to - but never did- leave his wife, a dear friend said to me, "I made a pledge to myself to never, ever again waste my precious time on this earth with someone who won't commit to me one hundred percent."

The earnestness of her declaration and pledge continues to echo in my mind years later.

Just as we are taught the pledge of allegiance in school, what if we were also taught healthy relationship pledges to make to ourselves?

Would our love lives be more fulfilling? Our marriages stronger?

The following are 21 relationship pledges to make to yourself,  to help you focus on having the best love life possible:

1. I pledge not to ever tolerate any kind of abuse, no matter what form it may take.

2. I pledge to never sacrifice my identity in order to stay in a relationship.

3. I pledge to be responsible for my own happiness, regardless if I am in a relationship or not

4. I pledge to remain in relationships where my partner and I are fully committed to each other.

5. I pledge to be present in my relationship.

6. I pledge to honestly communicate my needs and desires to my partner.

7. I pledge never to bring up the past in an argument.

8. I pledge to continue to pursue my personal dreams and goals while in a relationship.

9. I pledge to never take my partner for granted.

10. I pledge to never involve myself with a married, or otherwise attached, person.

11. I pledge to never use my children as weapons in emotional warfare with my partner.

12. I pledge never to allow a partner to belittle me.

13. I pledge to demonstrate how love is a verb in my relationship

14. I pledge to practice acceptance and extend compassion toward my partner

15. I pledge to only remain in relationships in which I feel complete acceptance.

16. I pledge to respect my partner's need for individual space.

I7.  I pledge to always remember my partner is human with flaws like everyone else.

18. I pledge to respect my partner's spiritual beliefs with the expectation of the same in return.

19. I pledge to never allow a relationship to stifle my need to grow as a human being.

20. I pledge to tell my partner how much I love them more often.

21. I pledge to be with someone who finds humor in life and laughs with me.

What are some great relationship pledges not included on this list?

Great list of pledges! One to add: I pledge to keep growing, changing and striving with my partner. We really value avoiding stagnation in our relationships and keeping focused on new challenges and adventures.
